The Sindh High Court (SHC) has stated lawyer Jibran Nasir and his wife Mansha Pasha’s inclusion in the watch list — which led to them being stopped from travelling to Dubai last month — was done “secretively”, adding that the move to bar them from travelling abroad was “without lawful authority”.
Earlier this month, Nasir — who was “picked up by unidentified men” outside his residence in Karachi in June and released 24 hours later — revealed that he was stopped from travelling to Dubai by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) last month.
“We checked in our luggage, got boarding passes, cleared immigration and got the exit stamps but while approaching the departure lounge we were called by an FIA official who appeared to be receiving instructions from someone on his phone,” he said in a post on social media platform X.

The official, he continued, took their passports and read the names to the person he was on the phone with. Nasir quoted the officer as saying “yahi log hain aap kay (these are your people)” after which “we were made to miss our flight, our baggage returned and offloaded stamps affixed on our passports”.
“No formal explanation was given except for ’samjha karain sir, hamain instructions hain aap ko janay nahi dena (please understand sir, we have been given instruction to not allow you to leave),” the activist said.
Nasir said neither he nor his wife received any information pertaining to the matter from the interior ministry. He also shared photos of passports, which showed an “offloaded” stamp.
Subsequently, Nasir had approached the SHC against the move. The plea had urged the court to declare actions of offloading Nasir and restraining his travel abroad “illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional”.
The SHC order, penned by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, said, “Under the law, to prohibit any person from leaving Pakistan must be exercised by means of an order which should be communicated to the affected person(s) as soon as the order is passed.
“This means that if any order is passed but the same is not communicated to the person concerned, it would be a case of arbitrary exercise of power if the order is kept secret only to surprise the person later the moment he is leaving the country,” it said.
The SHC further said that a person could not be placed on a no-fly list without issuing a show-cause notice or providing an opportunity of hearing.
“Since the placement of a person on the watch list or Exit Control List (ECL) curtails the freedom of movement of a citizens, it is settled that a person cannot be placed in the said list unless a show-cause notice, and an opportunity of hearing is provided to him before the adverse action is taken against him/her,” the order said.
“So far, as the facts of the present cases are concerned, inclusion of petitioners’ names in the watch list was done secretively as the petitioners were never served with any notice that their names were included in the watch list, let alone providing them an opportunity of hearing before placing them in the watch list. On these grounds alone, the acts of the Ministry of Interior/FIA, culminating in the offloading of the petitioners, who are husband and wife, from the plane was without lawful authority.”

Members of Karachi’s modelling fraternity are outraged after makeup artist Bryan William was assaulted by model Robina Khan Shah’s husband during a shoot for Nabila’s Salon.
In a series of Instagram stories, Shah confirmed that her husband assaulted the makeup artist but claimed he “abused” her first. William has not commented on the situation and Images has reached out to him for a statement.

Shah claimed that William called her a “do takay ki model [two-bit model]” when she “requested” him to carry her phone when she was ready to begin shooting. “He blatantly said that he is not going to do that and that ‘do takay’ ki model like me should take care of her own stuff,” she wrote, alleging that he “swore” at her, which she returned in kind.
The model said her driver called her husband and informed him about the situation. “I am sure that no respectable husband would tolerate anyone abusing at his wife for no reason,” she said, adding that her husband “got flared up” because of the makeup artist’s “condescending behaviour” and slapped him.
She claimed that the situation had been “blown out of proportion” and the entirety of the blame had been placed on her and her husband. The model questioned what other people or their families would do had “such abuses” been hurled at them at their workplace.
She also questioned why most models were siding with the makeup artist instead of her.
Nabila’s Salon has also posted a statement seemingly disassociating itself from the model on its official Instagram. “The safety, respect, and dignity of our employees is of utmost importance. We only choose to associate with professionals who share similar values,” it read.
The brand involved in the shoot, Mina Hassan, also addressed the issue on Instagram, condemning the behaviour as deplorable and announcing action against those responsible.

Fraternity reacts
Several members of Karachi’s fashion fraternity spoke up in William’s defence. Though he has not commented on the matter, he has reshared several stories of support to his Instagram page.
One of the first people to talk about the incident was Mushk Kaleem, who called for the entire fashion fraternity to ban Shah. Her post was reshared by model Erica Robin who said she witnessed the incident. Actor Vardah Aziz also reshared Kaleem’s story and said no one should be able to get away with this kind of behaviour. Models Sana Sardar, Alyana Shamsi and Fatima Hasan expressed their support for William and said violence is never the answer.

Makeup artist Shainal also posted about the incident, highlighting that makeup artists are not servants.

The difference between good art and bad art is that good art is subtle. Pakistan struggles to do subtle. There is certainly your everyday slapstick comedy, the tragic heroine, and the flippantly violent hero. But no, Pakistan is not at all good at subtle, which is why Sarmad Khoosat’s Zindagi Tamasha is banned.
To put it succinctly, this film is about how a non-minority becomes a minority. The protagonist is a religious devout, who gets an instant rogue status for the crime of loving to dance effeminately. Had our hero danced unnoticed, he would have survived, but he gets caught [on camera] by the ridicule-addicted world of viral social media take downs and cancel-culture. Zindagi Tamasha is old world meets new, but it’s also the worst of both worlds.
We are a country that prefers staying within social constructs. A daughter must be dutiful towards a father. The respectable must not have whims. The wives must be able-bodied. The community must have only men and women. This is the only script that the gatekeepers of morality will accept — the grossly hypocritical. The utterly unrealistic. The fashionable lie. The rest is punishable.
Art that aligns completely with power is called propaganda. Zindagi Tamasha completely aligns with the circus of life.
The film, now finally released but on YouTube, has vindicated the idea that Pakistan is not just a fertile haven for bad art, it will do anything for good art to become commercially unsuccessful. Here, the creative process is marred by the fear of rejection, which is why we are inspired by the few artists who overcome their artistic terror and still show up in the arena.
Yet, as things stand now, the fear of the film board’s license refusal is bigger than your audience throwing rotten tomatoes at you. To be an artist in this country, first, you silence your inner critic and create art, then you face the likelihood of being silenced in the cinemas, despite creating art. It is no wonder then that artists either move abroad or move on to pamphleteering.
An award-worthy movie Shakespeare and Mirza Ghalib said it before Sarmad Khoosat did — “All the world’s a stage and the men and women merely actors” and “Bazeesha-e-Afal hai dunya mere agay [The world is just a sport of children and nothing more to me]”.
Yet, no one said it as dramatically as the Punjabi theatrics, Punjabi nuances and Punjabi lyricism that Khoosat directed in Zindagi Tamasha. He said it in the film because the characters are impulsive and brutish, and then he said it again at the introduction of the YouTube release.
In both film and publishing, the fact remains that whimsical people do whimsical things, on the set and off the set, script or no script. What the former does particularly well is that it brings to life the loud, uncanny, and in-your-face discrepancies between what we believe in and what we want others to believe about us. The dialogue, short and snappy, the characters believable and cherished, and the cinematography, seared in the museums we collect in our minds.
